Powering your device

Input Power

i  Important Notes

  • The input power should be 24-57VDC and a minimum of 15W is recommended to power the switch.
  • Negative (-) V input is not currently supported.
  • TNS-100 devices can not be powered by active PoE (802.3at, etc). Only passive PoE is supported.
  • PoE Out on the TNS-100 will have the same voltage as the input voltage.  Only 4-pair PoE Out is supported.
  • Your TNS-100 should be mounted in a way (such as on its side) to allow air to flow under the unit.

The TNS-100 can be powered two ways, either via:

  1.  The power over ethernet (PoE) input port, or via

  2.  The DC barrel jack input

Both powering methods should not be used at the same time.

The input power should be 24V - 57VDC in both cases and a minimum of 15W is recommended.  The PoE-In port (ETH0) has a maximum input current of 1A regardless of input voltage used.  For larger power needs (e.g. when powering multiple devices with PoE Out), the DC input should be utilized and supports a maximum of 4A input current.

Output Power

The TNS-100 has the ability to send passive PoE out of 4 of the 2.5Gbps ports (ETH1-4) to power other devices using the input power provided to the TNS-100.   These settings can be found under the Settings -> Interfaces section of the Web UI.

The output voltage is the same as the input voltage and each ports supports a maximum of .8A of current per port (45W total @ 57VDC, lower when using lower voltage).

!   Warning: when using the PoE out feature on the TNS-100, care should be taken to ensure there is adequate power supply to power both the TNS-100 and any additional devices powered via the PoE Out ports.  Remember to calculate power losses on the line run - especially longer line runs.  Supplying inadequate power will result in unstable operation.

!   Warning: passive PoE out on the 2.5Gbps port can damage non-PoE devices. Do not connect non-PoE devices to the 2.5Gbps port when PoE out is enabled. Also note that only 4-Pair PoE output is supported. Devices that only accept power on 2 pairs can be damaged by 4-pair PoE.

Device access for initial configuration

i  You will need a modern web browser in order to access the device's Web UI to configure your device.

  1. First, power on the device.  Please refer to input power options above.

  2. Connect your laptop’s network cable to any of the TNS-100's ports.

  3. Log in to your device's local web UI in your web browser at the DHCP-assigned IP, or the fallback IP previously mentioned, using the default credentials of root/admin.  Please change the default user credentials after you login for the first time.

  4. Go to the configuration settings tab via the main nav menu on the left in order to configure your device. Please refer to the full web UI manual for details about each setting, or continue reading below about how to configure VLANs.

Basic configuration

VLAN Configuration

By default, the TNS-100 is configured to use the native management VLAN ID of 1.

This can be changed by changing the default management VLAN ID from the VLAN settings page.  On this page, you can also add additional trunk or access VLAN IDs.

Interface Configuration

To enable PoE out, enable/disable, or add a descriptive note to one or more of your device's ports, visit the Interface settings page of the web UI.

SFP Configuration

If you plan on using a 1G SFP module instead of a 10G SFP+ module, you'll need to enable SFP 1G support under the Interface settings page of the web UI.

Additional Configuration Settings

For information about the additional configuration settings, please refer to the the TNS-100 web UI manual.

Troubleshooting your TNS-100

Please take the following steps to troubleshoot any devices that have sub-optimal performance:

  1. Check to see if the devices are running the latest firmware.  The latest firmware can be found here.

I'm still having trouble with my device, what do I do next?

Please collect the troubleshooting files for both sides of the link you're trying to make, and send them to us at support@tachyon-networks.com, along with any other relevant info you might have about your install such as:

  1. How you are powering the device

  2. What other accessories (cameras, radios, etc) are connected to the device, and whether or not PoE out to power the accessory device.

  3. Relevant environmental details, such as where this device is installed, ambient temperature, etc.

You can find the link to download a device's troubleshooting file from the menu located under the gear/settings icon in the web UI, in the upper right corner (see below screenshot under the "Updating firmware" section).

Updating firmware

Firmware can be updated in two ways:

  1. Via the web UI: Download the latest firmware from our support site, and upload it via the web UI:
  2. Via the RESTful API: You can script firmware upgrades via the API. Reference the Tachyon Networks RESTful API specs article for more information.

All TNS-100 series devices have two bootbanks.  In the event that a firmware upgrade fails (power flicker, etc) and the device cannot boot up, it will revert back to the firmware flashed on the previous bootbank.

Resetting your device

You can reset your device to factory defaults 2 ways:

  1. Reset button: Find a paperclip, or something similar, and use it to press and hold the physical reset button on the device for 20 seconds or more. This will not have any affect if the reset button is disabled in software.

  2. Via the web UI: Once you're logged in, click the gear icon in the upper right corner, as shown below, and you'll see the reset option:
